What Our Patients
Are Saying

"My husband and I had been trying to conceive for over three years, enduring eight cycles of Clomid assisted intrauterine insemination (IUI) without success. Finally, we accepted that we needed to
go down the route of accepting donor eggs and
IVF. This was a huge decision, and obviously
an expensive option.

We wanted to optimize the IVF, implantation and success of the pregnancy as much as possible. As a skeptical medical doctor, I did a huge amount of research and discovered, to my surprise, that properly conducted clinical trials had shown that acupuncture can significantly increase the chances of success in these situations. I also discovered that David Youran specialized in acupuncture for fertility issues, and had reproduced some of these results in his own practice. So, I concluded acupuncture couldn't hurt, and
there was solid evidence that it could help.

Thus, I embarked on acupuncture treatment with David before and after my IVF and implantation. I also had acupuncture at the time of the implantation procedure. At first pass, I am now thirty-seven weeks pregnant with twin girls (term for twins) and the Cesarean section is scheduled for this week!

I have no doubt that acupuncture played a role in maintaining my mental, emotional, and physical health, plus the health of my pregnancy, and babies throughout. I enjoyed David's calm, knowledgeable, professional manner, and his curiosity, personal interest, and desire to improve his expertise all the time. He was clear about where acupuncture
could and couldn't help.

As my pregnancy progressed, I also received massage at the clinic for my musculoskeletal aches and pains. Finally, David's clinic is a wonderful, relaxing place to be. His colleagues are all also professional, interested and helpful."

Recent IRA Successes

A thirty-seven year old woman first came to our clinic in June 2009. She had a five year old daughter but was having trouble conceiving a second child. She was able to get pregnant in June of 2008, but unfortunately had a miscarriage at about six weeks. She told me she was very concerned about the stress she was experiencing related to her fertility issues.

Her menstrual cycles were very short, usually lasting approximately twenty-three days with ovulation taking place around Day 8 or 9. She asked me repeatedly if I had seen success treating women with similar menstrual cycles and I assured her that I had but it might take several months to help regulate her cycles and achieve a good healthy pregnancy.

I treated her with acupuncture for three weeks in a row during the first month and her ovulation occurred on Day 9. She did report that she was feeling less stressed and that her husband had mentioned she seemed calmer. The second month I treated her with acupuncture and we also used an herbal formula which she took daily for the first half of her cycle. That second month she ovulated on Day 9 again.

On the third month of treatment using acupuncture and herbs she ovulated on Day 10. She was encouraged by this progress and decided that the next month she would start using injectable medications to help the process along. She never had to go this route because she found out she was pregnant. She emailed me a few days ago and wrote, "We hit the fifteen week mark today and are going strong. Thank you for your help."

IRA eNewsletter - November 2009

It is hard to believe that November is upon us. The weather has turned cooler and each day more leaves fall, all signs Thanksgiving will be here in just a few short weeks. Originally, Thanksgiving was a celebration of the harvest but is now viewed, in general, as a time to express gratitude.

Speaking of gratitude, this is a good time to reflect on all that we have to be thankful for. In my professional life, I am most thankful for all of our wonderful patients. Whether you have been to see us just once or throughout the years, I would like to thank you for giving us the opportunity to serve you.

Many years ago my teacher, Dr. Thomas Duckworth, taught me that each time a patient lies down on the table I should be thankful to them. In that moment, you are putting your faith in me to help you and I am privileged to have that opportunity to provide you the highest level of care. Thankfulness is an important lesson to remember. So as we continue to grow and meet new patients at IRA, and forge new relationships, I am, and will continue to be, grateful to each of you.

Take care and be well,

David Youran
Director and Founder

IVF Couples Warned Over Drinking

IVF Couples Warned Over Drinking

Couples trying to conceive through IVF could be significantly harming their chances if they share the equivalent of a bottle of wine a week, experts warn.

If both partners drink six units a week, equivalent to half a bottle of wine each, their chance of a live birth is cut by a quarter, a study suggests. Doctors said couples may want to "play it safe" and not drink at all to maximize their chances of IVF success.

The findings are based on a U.S. study of more than 2,500 couples.

Alternative Treatments May Boost IVF Success

Alternative Treatments May Boost IVF Success

New research suggests that mind-body treatment can boost the odds that infertile women will become pregnant by IVF at least after more than one cycle.

Dr. Alice Domar, who specializes in mind-body therapy in Boston, assigned one group of women undergoing in IVF to take part in ten sessions of a mind-body program; another group undergoing IVF did not take part. There was no difference in pregnancy rates between the two groups.

But things changed during the next cycle of IVF treatments. Then, fifty-two percent of the women who took part in the mind-body program became pregnant, compared with twenty percent of those in the other group.

Mind-body sessions appeared to be especially helpful for women who were more depressed, judging from test scores, the study found.

Acupuncture May Bring Relief for Common Condition

Acupuncture May Bring Relief for Common Condition

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, a common condition among women, can be relieved by the use of acupuncture and exercise. This is the conclusion of a recent study at the Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, Sweden.

Nearly ten percent of women of reproductive age have Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). The syndrome expresses itself as a large number of small immature cysts on the ovaries that cause a disturbance in the production of hormones and an increase in the secretion of the male sex hormone. This means that many women with the condition do not ovulate normally, and the syndrome may lead to infertility. The women run an increased risk of becoming obese, developing type-two diabetes, or developing cardio-vascular disease.
